Ralph Lauren — The Whole House

This week's headline read: one name, ten labels, and a 34× spread between the basement and the top floor.

Edition 1b · Pulled Oct 28, 2026 Labels measured for this spotlight — all now tracked in the Rankings

The Story

Ralph Lauren is not one resale market — it is a ladder. At the bottom sits Chaps, the licensed department-store label, rating 2.99 against 41,000+ live listings. At the top sits Purple Label at 102.21, turning over 56% of its supply at a $183 average. Polo — the label most resellers mean when they say "Ralph" — sits in the flooded middle of its own house: 240,000+ men's sales a quarter against 840,000+ live listings.

The resale story of the edition is the discontinued labels. Denim & Supply, Black Label and Rugby are dead lines: finite supply, no new stock ever, and cult demand that keeps clearing what surfaces. Rugby's jackets rate 53.06 (Buy) fourteen years after the label closed; Denim & Supply's jackets rate 42.12 (Buy) at a $110 average; Black Label still trades like luxury at a hair under a $100 overall average. The dead labels outrate most of the living house.

The Labels, Segment By Segment

Denim & Supply — Discontinued

The dead label with a pulse: jackets rate 42.12 (Buy band) at a $110 average, tees turn over at 72%, hoodies at 44%. A discontinued Americana line doing exactly what discontinued lines are supposed to do once supply stops — the good pieces clear. Its 11.02 overall sits above Polo's flood pricing on a fraction of the volume.

Rugby — Discontinued 2012

The prep-school ghost trades hot: jackets 53.06 (Buy) at $188, sweaters 25.99 at $94, and nearly the entire label is shirts — the rugby shirt is its namesake product, so the shirt row is the label. Everything turns ~25–28%. Fourteen years dead and the crest still clears; that is the collector premium this ladder exists to show.

Black Label — Discontinued

The slim-cut ghost still trades like luxury: $279 jackets, $157 sweaters, an overall average a hair under $100 — on thin, discontinued-supply volume (39–253 sales per segment, so the thin flags are doing work). It sits a full tier above Lauren overall (16.56 vs 12.11) on one-fifth of the volume, and its shirts are the weak row, as shirts are on nearly every rung of this ladder.

Collection — Women's Runway

The runway rung prices like one: $390–395 averages on dresses and jackets, ratings 25–74 — on couture-thin volume (77–120 sales per segment), so every row carries the thin caveat. The overall keyword total runs ~8× the clothing segments’ sum because sellers title “Collection” loosely; the leaf-anchored segments are the precision here.

Lauren — Women's Mainline

The department-store engine: the biggest single-label footprint on the ladder (470,000+ sold in 90 days across all categories — shoes, bags and home included in that overall, so lean on the clothing segments). Her jackets (15.38) and sweaters (12.22) beat most of Polo's men's page at real prices — $72 jackets, $59 sweaters moving at 20%+ turnover. The flood is here too (100,000+ live tops), but unlike Chaps, the label carries price through it.

RLX — Performance Line

A working rung, not a headline: overall 6.95, between Chaps and Denim & Supply, with hoodies (18.03) and jackets (16.33) doing the work and the golf polo flooded like every pony polo (5.04 against 17,000+ live).

Chaps — Licensed Basement

The basement is the basement: overall 2.99, no segment above 6, sweaters under the 10% sell-through gate, and shirts turning 2,100+ sales into a 1.78 because 21,000+ listings are chasing them. Same pony-adjacent name, none of the heat — this is what a licensed label looks like when department-store racks did the distributing.

Insights

Niches Within The Segment

Jackets Are The Business On Almost Every Rung. The top segment at Denim & Supply (42.12), Rugby (53.06), Black Label (34.26), Collection (74.46), Lauren (15.38) and Chaps (5.92) is Coats, Jackets & Vests. At Purple Label the same row rates 200.48. Whatever the label, the heavy piece is the hunt.

Shirts Are The Weak Row On Nearly Every Rung. Black Label's shirts are its worst rated segment; Chaps shirts post 1.78 on 21,000+ listings; Polo's shirts are the single biggest row in this spotlight's world — 110,000+ sold against 450,000+ live — and rate 7.72. The ladder's lesson repeats at every height: buy the knitwear and the jackets, skip the basics.

The Cable-Knit Sleeper. Polo Women's sweaters rate 23.81 at a $79 average (+1.18 this edition) and her coats 20.89 at $104 — the women's page proves the ladder isn't just a men's story.

The Grails

Grails are singles — one piece, one sale. The house's grail ceiling is leather and cashmere at the luxury end: five of the top eight are Purple Label; the other three are an RRL limited leather and iconic Polo — Snow Beach '93 and a Polo Country hand-painted deerskin. Every card is a verified sold listing from the Edition 1b pull — click through to the sale itself.

The Dead Labels Still Bite

The top two sold singles from each discontinued label. Every one clears $730–$1,250, and every one is a jacket or a cardigan — the finite-supply story, backed by sold money, not nostalgia.

The Price That Clears

The pony polo clears on volume, not margin: 54,000+ sold against 220,000+ live listings at a $32.55 average (R2R 7.99). There is always another one listed — price is set by the flood, not the piece.

Lauren's jackets carry price through a flood: $71.97 average at 21.4% turnover (15.38) — department-store labels with real construction hold a price Chaps never touches: Chaps shirts average $17.83 against 21,000+ listings.

Discontinued pieces clear because supply can't answer: Rugby jackets sell at $188.39 with a 28.2% turnover; when a dead label's good piece surfaces, there is no restock behind it.

Landmines

Chaps Is Not Ralph Lauren For Resale Purposes. A licensed label with a 2.99 overall and sweaters under the sell-through gate. The name on the tag is where the resemblance ends.

Collection's Overall Reads Loose. The all-category keyword total runs ~8× its clothing segments — "collection" is a word sellers title everything with. Trust the leaf-anchored segments, and respect the thin flags: 77–120 sales per row.

Lauren's Overall Is All-Category Scope. 470,000+ sold includes shoes, bags and home. The clothing story is the segments: jackets and sweaters real, tops a flood.

Polo's Basics Are A Lottery. Shirts at 450,000+ live listings and polos at 220,000+ — the two biggest pools in the house are its two most ordinary rows.

The Takeaway

Buy the ladder by rung, not by name: Purple Label and Double RL at the top, the discontinued labels' jackets in the middle, Polo's knitwear and coats as the working rows — and leave Chaps and the flooded basics on the rack, whatever the tag says.
